How to Save a life was established on June 21, 2007, Karl's Birthday. The purpose of this foundation is to help people into treatment and recovery houses that would otherwise not have access to treatment. All proceeds go strictly into the program.

This program was developed due to the fact Karl wanted to go to an in-patient facility for help with his addiction to painkillers and was denied treatment. Karl died 6 weeks later after being denied the help he so desperately wanted.

How to Save a Life's goal is provide assistance to those suffering from addictive disorders receive the help they want and need. How to Save a Life is giving the chance of life that Karl D. Hottenstein did not have.
